The paper considers different aspects of thematic humour and argues that professional jokes do not reveal many cultural distinctions with the hardest understanding challenge being homonyms and polysemantic words that cause ambiguity and lead to incongruity – the main mechanism of humour generation. Central to the research are English military jokes that are viewed as a thematic genre. Translation commentaries are considered an effective tool to eliminate lacunaes.
