Abstract

The paper draws attention to the problem of functional illiteracy. The study considers the role of metacognitive and metalanguage activity in the process of formation of language ability in ontogenesis, in particular, a preschooler’s ability to understand text. A connection is established between social factors in which the speech ability of a preschooler is shaped, the metalanguage ability and the resulting level of functional literacy. The analysis of extralinguistic environment is conducted, the last being viewed as social factors affecting the child involved in the experiment. The study of the active understanding of a language message given in spoken words is based on the methodology tested by E.G. Bieva in the 1980-s. It is concluded that the ability to understand a text message is being developed in the context of a well-organized subject-based practical activity of a child and their communication with adults. Attention is drawn to the deterioration of children’s speech health and general decrease in the level of speech / text understanding when a preschooler. It is considered to be a topic for further research viewed in the context of functional illiteracy and rapid development of polycode communication.
