The paper focuses on the findings of the experimental research aimed at identifying how mediatexts of two contrasted genres – that of news reports and analytical com-mentaries – are perceived by Russian native speakers and how their manipulative potential is fulfilled. Before the experiment was run, the authors worked on the analysis of the manipulative tools used in the mediatexts of these different genres and defined genre-related specifics of manipulation effected through them. Then the experimental data were systemized and interpreted. The methodological framework of the research was shaped by works of Russian and international researchers and academics who looked into genre-related mediatext characteristics and the specifics of the manipulation effected through them. The key research method is the experi-ment. The findings obtained in the experiment reveal several genre-specific traits of media text perception by Russian native speakers.
