Abstract

This paper studies the methods of constructing artlangs as alien languages that are at the same time close to natural languages as exemplified by the material of the Klingon language. The authors show that the structure of an artlang is determined by its main function within a work of art, i.e. aesthetic function. The construction of an artlang is pragmatically determined, on the one hand, by the necessity to demon-strate its essential difference from natural languages, on the other hand, to create a real means of communication that is reproduced by people and possesses all the features of a natural language. The latter is achieved, firstly, by creating linguistic variation at all levels of the system, which emphasizes the naturalness of an artlang as a communicative means that develops dialect forms. Secondly, to construct the phonological system of the Klingon language, about 70% of the sounds of English are used, which corresponds to the approximate ratio of common and special sounds in natural languages. Finally, the constructed language has a specific proso-dy. All elements are systematic, and therefore the material of the Klingon language can be included in sociolinguistic, structural and other linguistic studies.
