Franco-Russian bilingualism as a factor of identity transformation

Abstract

The paper addresses the issue of identity transformation which manifests itself through alterations in the opposition “own” / “alien”. The analysis, based on Fyodor Dostoevskyʼs novel “The Possessed”, reveals numerous “alien” markers in the char-acter's speech. The way in which these elements function in the text reflects an eth-nic and cultural dissonance. Main signs thereof are the elevation of the “alien” and the denigration of the “own” which confirms that the character in question is an individual with conflicting personal identity.
