The article looks into discursive practices of academic discourse characteristic of critical political epochs with a particular focus on the period of totalitarianism. The article analyzes the metamorphoses of the personality of linguists of the USSR and Germany, considered as activity in an extreme life situation, including the causes and types of personality changes, which is associated with the phenomenon of choice of a scientist. The author uses authentic materials interpreted by means of the method of narrative lingvo historiography.
