The paper considers the features of 14 language units with the primary meaning of «rural resident» in a number of Latin American national variations of the Spanish language, and reveals similar features in the development of their additional semantics. Central to the research is the historical factor that influenced the perception of rural residents by urban ones, which has been reflected in the language. The analysis of meanings and actualization of the lexical units analyzed makes it possible to identify coincidences in both negative and positive connotations in their evaluative semantics. The article concludes that further and more detailed investigation of such units is needed in order to identify the distinguishing features of meanings and connotations within the specified lexical-semantic group.
