Study of the process of memorizing words of foreign language: Experimental research

Abstract

The article is devoted to consideration of the problem of memorizing new words by a shaping bilingual studying a related foreign language, which is relevant for psycholinguistics, psychology and methodology on teaching foreign languages. As the title implies the aim of the study is to investigate experimentally the effect of the semantic and phonetic characteristics of words of a related language on memorizing them. The paper deals with the term «memory» and the process of learning, the division of the general term into semantic and episodic memory is noted. The definition of word from the view of psycholinguistics is introduced. Attempts are made to analyze and summarize the notion of «mental lexicon» and to observe the surface level and the deep level of it. The features of a word, their correlation with the levels of lexicon mentioned above, according to which it is identified by a person are also mentioned in the paper. The article is also concerned with influence of the difference between the language pictures of the world of native and non-native speakers, particularly between the processes of acquiring knowledge, on the learning of a word of a foreign language. In addition to that, the study gives the information on the difficulties, which a person learning a related foreign language deals with. Considering the given theoretical foundations, the author suggests that some features of a lexical item may have effect on memorizing it. To prove the suggestion the method of psycholinguistic experiment is used. Based on the two conducted experiments the author concludes that definite features of words, such as their phonetic peculiarities, as well as the understanding of the inner shape of a word by a person and the existence of a word in the person’s active vocabulary can influence the memorizing of a word of a foreign language.
