The metaphor sparks interest of psychotherapists and researchers in the field of psychiatry. The use of testing on the interpretation of figurative language as a diagnostic tool for identifying mental illnesses is a debatable issue. In psychothera-peutic practice, it is believed that joint construction of metaphors contributes to the patient’s self-awareness and the awareness of the world around. The current review covers the scope of research that analyses the use of metaphor for diagnosing mental disorders and providing therapeutic assistance to patients.
