The article offers a comprehensive reconstruction of social and communicative characteristics of a group of Russian society, nominated by the expression «elderly people». Fragments of the mental lexicon associated with the interpretation of the elderly by informants of different age groups and the value components of the consciousness of the elderly are revealed in the psycholinguistic part with the help of experiments. The cognitive-discursive part consists of a description of thematic personal discourses with the subject area «elderly people», including those generated by pensioners themselves; thematic institutional discourses devoted to the problems of age, etc.
