The paper features a review of the research on foreign accent as a marker of immigrants’ national identity in the host community. In order to illustrate the importance of foreign accent in ethnic categorization, the authors present a number of experimental studies describing the features of foreign accent recognition in different age groups. In addition, the paper demonstrates the results of surveys among immigrants, which confirm the importance of foreign accent in the context of expressing national identity. The analysis of scientific literature on the topic covered brings us to the conclusion that foreign accent should be considered among the factors that reveal national identity, as it is currently no less significant as a marker of social and ethnic categorization than the speaker’s gender or race.
