The paper attempts to differentiate the meanings of the words «tresk» and «khrust» representing sound sensations, based on experimental linguistic procedures (semantic and associative experiments). The procedure of experimental research is considered, and the controversial aspects of its practical usage for studying the words «tresk» and «khrust» are described. The paper shows how cognitive interpretation of the meaning of synonyms helps to distinguish their meaning and explain the differences in their use. The experimental study of actualizing the «tresk» and «khrust» sound sensations and cognitive interpretation of the experimental findings confirmed that there are three semantic and cognitive features, which differentiate the meanings of these synonyms.
