The article studies different approaches to interpreting the main theme of J. Joyce’s story Evelin. Methods of narrative, linguo-semiotic, structural and linguistic analysis prove the validity of all points of view. An important step of analysis is considera-tion of the major event and the main characters’ behaviour with regard to the literary onomasticon of the story. As a result, it is concluded that by interacting with each other all text elements and units complete each other in terms of meaning-making, thus creating conditions for new text interpretations and bringing to the surface the main character’s inner conflict.
