The author analyses the beginnings of Anglo-Saxon studies, which shed light on Anglo-Saxon language and culture before the Norman Conquest. The research ob-ject is the contribution of linguists to shape ethnocultural identity, when the value of Anglo-Saxon heritage raised doubts in the eyes of a large part of British intellectuals. The research covers works of British philologists in late 17th – early 18th centuries including their metatextual components, examined in the context of intellectual dis-cussions of that time.
