The paper examines the specifics of language representation of agonal communicative situation though the lense of metadiscourse. The material for the analysis comprised the speeches by Joseph Biden and Donald Trump as a part of the 2024 election campaign. The purpose of the paper is to analyse interactive metadiscourse markers (stance and engagement markers, in particular), which would shed light on the specifics of communication with voters. The analysis indicated that the most productive interactive metadiscourse markers include reader mention, attitude markers and boosters, which aim at addressee engagement and persuasiveness of the way propositional information is presented. Reader mention being a prevailing metadiscourse marker, is mainly signalled by inclusive pronouns we, our and lexemes marking social groups that involve both addresser and addressee; reader mention markers indicate the focus on engagement when the opposition ‟we – they” is introduced.
