The article examines the pragmatic and linguistic mechanisms of constructing a world picture – universal and national basic values – from the point of view of modeling secondary reality through the prism of the subjective principle in modern small prose. Based on the empirical study of the story «Skatina» by O. Bondarenko (2019), we explore the mechanisms of modeling the vector of assessment and interpretation of the narrative by the reader. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the way of introducing the characters of the story into the text, the images of which explicate the value attitudes of modern society, represented by the key concepts, the carriers of which are the characters of the story, and their introduction and indication illustrate the obvious author’s preferences.
