The article deals with the problem of understanding and misunderstanding of communicative goals and value content of a text. Readers should possess a sufficiently developed information thesaurus to understand texts, their communicative goals and nationally specific values suggested by their authors, as well as the emotional-evaluative perception of the text. Readers should have linguistic knowledge, extra-linguistic (encyclopaedic) knowledge and metainformation about the organization of specifically given information. The article discusses external reasons that predetermine the variability of understanding of a literary text.
