Nomination as a means of creating the image of heroes in the epic (based on the material of Russian bylinas) (Open access)

Abstract

The paper deals with the specifics of nomination as an important means of creating the image of the hero in the epic. Particular attention is paid to the structural types of nominations of heroes in Russian bylinas, their inner form and their functions. Bylinas are old Russian epic songs which are centred around the images of bogatyrs with high moral standards and selfless devotion to their country. The nomination is an expressive device to help compose portraits of bogatyrs, to reveal their character traits and to interpret the images of bogatyrs to readers (or listeners).
